Freya Welch Artist Statement

Freya Welch's uncanny work uses realistic intervention in surreal zones and theatrical motifs to depict consciousness as performance, creating warped reflections of reality that pressure the viewer to deconstruct their biases. Welch uses a range of media, including sculptural forms, oil painting and stop motion animation to depict spatiotemporal leaks from alternative realities that force the viewer to escape from their foundational perceptions.

In her recent work, she explores how feelings of apathy are becoming more common and, in contrast with the constant fluctuation of everyday life, are an example of forced performance that can affect relationships and politics. The tension between sentient and static is continuously explored throughout Welch's work, commonly depicting objects that are preconceived to be animate as motionless and objects that are preconceived to be inanimate as active, urging the viewer to confront their own internal conflicting beliefs both morally and emotionally.
